Falconry Response (Hawk Flying)
Bird control using birds of prey is a natural, highly effective and specialist method of managing pest bird activity, particularly across large, open or sensitive sites. By introducing trained hawks and falcons into the environment, we create a genuine predator presence that pest birds instinctively respond to. This encourages them to leave the area and, more importantly, prevents them from settling or returning over time.
Falconry-based bird control is at the core of our service. It is not a one-off solution, but a structured programme designed to influence bird behaviour through regular, consistent presence. Pest birds quickly associate the site with risk, making it an unattractive place to roost, feed or nest. This approach provides a long-term solution rather than a temporary fix, reducing reliance on reactive or short-term control methods.
This method is particularly effective where traditional proofing is impractical or unsuitable. This includes large industrial sites, warehouses, airfields, landfill sites, stadiums, listed buildings and areas where proofing would be visually intrusive or disruptive to operations. Falconry allows us to cover large areas efficiently while maintaining flexibility around site activity and access.
All birds used within our programmes are professionally trained and managed by experienced falconers. They are not used to hunt, but to provide a controlled and sustained deterrent. Flights are carefully planned around site conditions, bird pressure and operational requirements to ensure maximum effectiveness while maintaining safety at all times.
Each falconry programme begins with a detailed site assessment to understand bird behaviour, pressure points and risk areas. From this, we develop a tailored programme that considers visit frequency, timing and supporting control measures where required. Falconry is often used alongside additional techniques such as proofing, scaring devices or other compliant control methods to deliver a complete, long-term solution.
Our aim is to provide a humane, environmentally responsible and highly visible form of bird control that not only manages current issues but actively prevents future problems. Through consistent presence, professional handling and a structured approach, falconry remains one of the most effective tools available for modern bird management.
Falconry Response (Hawk Flying)
Our falconry response service uses specially trained birds of prey to deter nuisance birds from a wide range of sites, including schools, hospitals, shopping centres, retail parks, town centres, warehouses, factories, industrial sites, landfill sites, sporting venues, train stations and airports.
Falconry response is delivered as a structured bird management programme rather than a one-off visit. The level of bird activity, species involved and surrounding environmental pressures all influence how nuisance birds respond, meaning each site requires a tailored approach.
Surveys & Programme Design
Before any falconry response programme begins, a detailed site survey is carried out. This allows us to assess bird species present, population size, behaviour patterns, seasonal pressures and surrounding land use.
Using this information, we design a site-specific programme that establishes the required number of visits, visit frequency and programme duration. This ensures effective control is achieved efficiently and maintained long-term.
How Falconry Response Works
Using hawks and falcons alters the behaviour patterns of nuisance birds rather than relying on static scaring devices that birds can quickly become accustomed to. The presence of a live bird of prey creates an environment that target species perceive as unsafe, encouraging them to move away from the site.
A series of visits is required to reinforce this response and break established behaviour patterns. Once achieved, control can be maintained through routine follow-up visits as part of an ongoing management programme. Unlike artificial deterrents, nuisance birds do not habituate to the presence of a live predator.
Our falconry response programmes are effective against species including gulls, pigeons, geese, rooks, crows and certain ground-nesting birds such as lapwings.
Humane, Responsible & Welfare-Led Control
Falconry response is a non-lethal and environmentally responsible bird control method. The objective is to deter birds away from sensitive areas, not to cause harm.
The welfare of our birds of prey underpins every programme. All birds are provided with appropriate housing, regular exercise and carefully managed nutrition to ensure they remain healthy, motivated and fit for work.
These programmes are widely supported by the public and offer positive public relations benefits for clients by demonstrating a humane and professional approach to bird management.
Our Falconers (Hawk Handlers) / Bird Control Technician’s
All of our bird control technicians undergo intensive falconry training leading to formal raptor award qualifications, alongside extensive training in all aspects of bird control. Our staff are professional, well presented, clearly identifiable and fully aware of legal requirements and public sensitivities when working on active or high-profile sites.
Our Birds of Prey
All birds flown by Lancashire Bird Control are company owned, domestically bred and specifically trained as working birds for nuisance bird control. They are not used for hunting and are fully accustomed to operating in urban, industrial and high-footfall environments.
Each bird is housed in purpose-designed accommodation, flown regularly as part of a structured exercise programme and maintained on carefully managed nutrition to support health, welfare and performance. Our birds remain focused on their handler and task, unaffected by the presence of the public, vehicles or machinery, ensuring safe, consistent and effective falconry response programmes.
